Foot Arthritis

Foot arthritis is something we can treat at the Corona Foot and Ankle Group.  How many of you think painful feet are just a part of everyday life?  It is not!  Your feet should not hurt, it’s not normal to live with pain in your feet.  For many of you, the pain in your feet is due to arthritis. For those of you who suspect you have foot athritis or have been diagnosed with the condition may be wondering what can be done about that without surgery.

There are different types of arthritis.  The number one kind of arthritis that most of us are going to get is osteoarthritis.  This is the “wear and tear” type of arthritis.  People who are more active, who are heavier or who have very flat feet or very high arches tend to get more osteoarthritis than others.  This type of arthritis is hard to avoid because we all have to use our feet.

The other types of arthritis are the autoimmune type.  For example, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, etc..  These inflammatory types of arthritis also cause joint damage in our feet.

Some conservative treatment modalities for patients with arthritis include shoe modification (don’t worry, there are plenty of cute comfy shoes on the market now), steroid injections, over the counter or custom orthotics (inserts for your shoes), foot soaks, massage therapy, strengthening exercises, and physical therapy.  Some newer, sophisticated treatments include PRP injections (platelet rich plasma) and micronized human amnionic membrane injections (yes, stem cells).  Recent studies indicate that these two injections show improvement in osteoarthritis symptoms.

You don’t’ have to live in pain with each step.  The less you move, the greater decline in your health.  Your feet are your wheels and my job is to keep those wheels rolling!
