Varicose Veins & Spider Veins

Are you embarrassed by enlarged, twisted, purple-looking veins on your legs? Do your varicose veins cause aching pain and discomfort?

You’re not alone. Nearly 30 million Americans suffer from vein disease. It’s common, chronic, and the symptoms including varicose veins and spider veins can be debilitating.

As a curious child, you might remember staring at an older relative’s thick stockings at the blue, gnarled veins lying under the skin like bumpy snakes. So are varicose veins and spider veins just an inevitable part of the aging process? No, they’re not! They are symptoms of diseased veins and their effect is reversible!

Varicose veins are a common condition caused by weak or damaged vein walls and valves. Blood can then flow backward, which is called venous reflux. Varicose veins may form whenever blood pressure increases inside your veins. Symptoms include aching, swelling, cramping, itching, restlessness, open skin sores, skin pigmentation or discoloration, skin thickening or hardening, and heaviness or tiredness in legs.

Risk Factors

You may be at increased risk for varicose veins if you are older, sit or stand for long periods, have an inactive lifestyle, have overweight or obesity, or have a family history of varicose veins. Pregnancy and childbirth, especially multiple births, also increase a woman’s risk. Women are four times more likely than men to develop varicose veins due to increased production of progesterone.

Diabetes causes high blood sugar levels, which can lead to the weakening of the blood vessels. In turn, the venous system is more susceptible to infection. Since blood vessels and veins are prone to inflammation and weakness, there is an increased risk of circulatory issues for those diagnosed with diabetes, including an increased risk of infection. Because both varicose veins and diabetes negatively impact circulation, the risk of developing life-threatening complications, such as deep vein thrombosis, rises.

Venous Reflux Disease

Varicose veins are ropey, twisted, raised and bloated-looking veins in your legs. However, varicose veins are not just unsightly, but they may also be painful and lead to serious complications such as ulcers, blood clots, and bleeding. Varicose beings may be the sign of something more severe- venous reflux disease, which is when vein valves stop working properly and allow blood to flow backward and pool in the lower leg veins. If left untreated, symptoms can worsen over time.

Treatment

Prevention and self-care treatment options include exercises, leg elevation, and wearing compression stockings. However, if you’re concerned with how your varicose veins look and feel, we can help. In addition to self-care tips and help with lifestyle changes, we at Corona Foot and Ankle are now offering superficial venous reflux disease treatment which reduces or even stops the backward flow of blood. VenaSeal™ Closure System is a safe and effective, non-thermal treatment option that improves blood flow and reduces symptoms by sealing the diseased vein. Blood is simply rerouted through nearby healthy veins. It is the only non-thermal, non-tumescent, non-sclerosant procedure approved for use in the U.S. that uses an advanced formulated medical adhesive that closes the diseased vein. The VenaSeal™ closure system procedure is designed to minimize patient discomfort and reduce recovery time. After the procedure, patients are able to rapidly return to normal activities.
